A.D. "Sparrow" Scout by Expo Models, 1/72nd scale vacuform
The A.D. Scout was designed as an anti-airship fighter in 1915. The plane was intended to be made from non critical materials that were normally used in aircraft of the period. Attaching the nacelle to the upper wing gave the pilot an un-interrupted field of view. The plane was to be armed with the Davis 2 pounder gun, but this gun was never installed.
Four were built and one was delivered for evaluation to the Royal Navy Air Station at Chingford, Essex. The plane was heavier than intended and was found to be unsatisfactory in flight. For this reason the plane was not developed. The A.D. Scout earned the nickname of "Sparrow" but was never officially known by that name.
Expo Models was a joint effort between several of the vacuform kit manufactures in 1987 with all proceeds to be donated to the Southern Expo 87. The pattern was donated by Les Cooper and Joe Chubbock, two fine men who were to spawn several vacuform companies. I personally think these two gentlemen's kit are as good as any vacuform kit on the market, then and now.
This kit was built prior to 1990, early in my vacuform building days. I do not remember much about the build but I do not recall any major problems, except alignment of the tail boom. The engine and prop are from Aeroclub, as were the decals. I have no idea how long it took to build.
